This wine originates in Marche midway on the Adriatic coast. Bianchello is the grape, a varietal indigenous to this region. Stories suggest that the varietal has been used to make wine in the region for the last 2,000 years but DNA testing has shown it to originate from Trebbiano. In the hands of believers and quality producers like Claudio Morelli, this varietal apparently can make some pretty characterful wine. This wine pours straw coloured. On the nose the wine is a bit muted but features attractive grapey aromas, particularly white grape juice. There’s a nice positive attack from the first sip and the aromas detected on the nose are confirmed with good concentration of flavours and a nice vein of minerality. This is surprisingly weighty (13%) but the grippy acidity keeps it lively. A decent length finish tapers to light palate-refreshing bitterness. A good food wine with light fare (I had it with pasta and salmon). Punches well above its weight.
