If I Could Buy Only One – November 18 VINTAGES Release

We asked our writers, “If you could buy only one wine from this release, which one would it be and why?”

Château Maucamps 2006

($39.95, Nicholas Pearce Wines Inc.)
John Szabo – My only one this week is spectacular value for mature, ready-to-drink, quality Bordeaux that would be a brilliant addition to any sophisticated meal this holiday season: Château Maucamps 2006. First tasted back in early 2021, I found the wine was drinking beautifully then, and it still is today, evolving slowly, in a textbook left bank Bordeaux style. 2006 has turned out to be a delight for fans of classic, more elegant and refined vintages.

Tenuta San Guido Le Difese 2021
Wynns Estate Coonawara The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

($24.95, Mark Anthony Wine & Spirits)
David Lawrason – In a release with many classic wines, especially from Tuscany, I applied my value filter and came up with two minor classics. One indeed is a Tuscan, the Tenuta San Guido Le Difese 2021, the third label from the Bolgheri winery that makes Sassicaia. It’s a very poised and elegant wine and a good deal at $47.95. But this classic The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 from Wynns is $20 less expensive with similar quality. From Coonawarra, one of the best cabernet regions outside of Europe, this sports a lovely composed exuberant nose of blackcurrant, boxwood, violet and fine cedary oak spice nuance. It is full bodied, dense yet quite open knit with a real sense of power. Lots going on here with firm cabernet tannin. So much stuffing and drenching fruit and i suspect it will age very well. But it will please now as well.

Le Serre Nuove Dell'Ornellaia 2021

Megha Jandhyala – My “only one” this week is the Le Serre Nuove Dell’Ornellaia 2021. Though Ornellaia’s second wine comes at a premium price, it is worth the expense, in my view, as a relatively affordable way to be introduced to the acclaimed Tuscan producer’s oeuvre. The product of an excellent vintage, it is poised and self-possessed, revealing itself at will, as it begins to breathe and bloom gradually. I love how concentrated and elegant it is, with a dense, refined, subtly saline palate, and enchanting flavours of plush dark fruit, violet essence, and herbs. One could serve this now after some aeration, but I would tuck it away in the cellar for at least 3-4 years to enjoy it when it has come into its own more.
