This is one of the great carmeneres of Chile - a very seductive red, but I urge you to age this a couple of years...

A big and rich, dense and ripe carmenere here from Montes, the winery's flagship bottling (with 8% petit verdot). It...

This blend of 92% Carmenere and 8% Petit Verdot spent 18 months in new French oak and features medium-high intensity aromas of lovely purple fruit, cedar and black fruits. Palate is full bodied and complex with black cherry, blackberry, herb, and licorice flavours. Mouth-watering acids with a rush of acidity mid-palate, giving way to long, smooth finish. Big, firm tannins should integrate nicely over time. This is a big, powerful wine - cellar and taste again in 2-3 years. Tasted Oct/2014.

Not a wine that I would go out and buy, but was neat to have the opportunity to try. This wine is all about being big and dense. Loads of black fruit, dark chocolate, baking spice, and coffee on the nose. On the palate, the acidity kept things refreshing while the tannins were quite big, though ripe and smooth, and the finish was long. What kept this more interesting than so many fruit bombs was the savoury note that is so often associated with Carmenere. Despite this added complexity, this is a wine to drink by itself on a cold winter's night. Tasted January 2015.
