Mencía (also known as Jaen in Portugal) is a Spanish variety grown mainly in northwest Spain in the region of Galicia. Bierzo is probably the best known appellation for Mencia but it is also prominent in Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra. The wines can have complex, dark fruit flavours with good acidity. Serve it lightly chilled with smoked meats, grilled vegetables and other barbecued meats.
